• Pledge leaders from the first-grade class of Cassie Key and Stephanie Brooks were Sadie Smith, Kristen Wells, Darionce Dotson, Tiara Sims, Jaedyn Caeson and Maggie Morin. Field Day winners: pre-K — class of Uretka Callon and Amanda Dunn, first place; and the class of Rachel Dean and Jennifer Funches, second place; kindergarten — class of Audrey Tolliver and Marlene Brooks, first place; classes of Kimberly Reynolds and Marquita Smothers and April Ross and Michelle Beard, second-place tie; and the class of Jennifer Penley and Rhonda Huntley, third place; first grade — classes of Tricia Bradley and Marquita Harris and Mary Lindsey and Gwen Strong, first place tie; class of Cassie Key and Stephanie Brooks, second place; and the class of Neely Ming and Pam Elam, third place; second grade — class of Kimberly Rhodman and Tiffany Hicks, first place; class of Ashley Cessna and Crystal White, second place; and the class of Betty Autry and Linda Doss class, third place; third grade — class of Holly Blackwell and Mychal Winters, first place; class of Juanita Roberts and Kristen Williams, second place; and the class of Charity Towne and Natalie Allen, third place.

• Assistant principal Arthur Jones, assisted by Felicia Myers, Monica Watson and counselor Kimberly Cooper, presented certificates and medallions to students receiving all A’s and A’s/B’s. Librarian Mary Johnson presented Accelerated Reader awards to M’kyla Stewart, Kiyana Blackshire, Ayanna Smith and Sabrina Smith, 50 or more points; Aisha Williams and Desirae Johnson, for most grade level points; and Marquasia Smith, overall winner trophy. GATES instructor Lana Fuller presented awards to Jonathan Truly, Hunter Williams, Danielle Robertson, Elliott Ferguson, Samantha Parker, Hannah Lee and Darius Burrell, AR point champions. Rebecca Pace, lead teacher, presented parent volunteer awards to the Rev. Khurman Cox, Ann Smith and Ida Williams for dedication during the school year. Pace presented bronze banners to first-grade classes of Cassie Key and Stephanie Brooks and April Farrell and Tonja Kline for efforts during the Pennies for Patients drive.

• The Boys Choir, directed by Grace Brown, was awarded a sock hop and hot dog/nacho party. Assisting with the celebration were Tiffany Hicks, Kristen Williams, Uretka Callon, Rhonda Denman and Claude Lee. Library staff members hosted an Accelerated Reader reward party for students earning 25 points or higher with at least an 80 percent average on AR tests. Parent volunteers Vigetta and Wakili Davis and Rachel Williams hosted an end-of-the-year-party for the first-grade class of Neely Ming and Pamela Elam. The second-grade class of Corley Ross and Mary Griffin was honored with a beach day and cookout. Parent volunteers Channing and Regina Adams, Johnny and Athena Henderson Jr., Marcus and LaSandra Davis, Jennifer London, Erica Cosey, Chantilly Darden and Robert Calbert assisted with the celebration.

• Marlene Brooks and Michelle Beard represented the school at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Arthur Jones, AmeriCorps site supervisor, represented the school at the end-of-the-year program at Alcorn. Barbara Tolliver, director of the United Way of West Central

Mississippi and mentor, provided breakfast for faculty and staff on the last day of school with the assistance of Christy Wilson. Federal Programs letters and parent survey results were distributed to parents last week; copies may be obtained in the office.

• The class of Penny Register, Mary Ann Taylor and Gwen Lewis toured the Jackson Zoo. Parent volunteer was Dora Thomas. Parent volunteers in the first-grade class of Sheryl Mobley and Yolanda Brown were Kenneth Austin, Kya Thomas, Demali Crawley, Brian Darden, Takita Jones, Felecia Powers, Sherita Jones, Jason Lee, Denise Tubbs, Lillie Tubbs, Brandon Caves, Kristin Baylot and Cassandra Ross. The first-grade class of Faye Corson and Robbie Meeks created optical illusions and circle fraction art after reading “Hello, Red Fox.” Peggy McKey spoke to kindergartners of Starla Breazeale and Desiree Norris about worms. A Vicksburg National Military Park ranger spoke about students’ summer park activities and about Old Abe, a bald eagle that served as a Civil War mascot.
