Sewer line on Grove being repaired

Repairs to a collapsed sewer line and an aging storm drain on a closed section of Grove Street between Fourth North and Fifth North streets should be completed in a week, interim public works director Garnet Van Norman said.
He said Grove Street between Fourth North and Fifth North had been closed about three weeks ago after the problem was discovered. He said traffic was rerouted around the area at Third North and Fifth North, adding the eastbound lane of Grove was reopened Tuesday afternoon. He said the lane could again be blocked once work resumes.
Van Norman said age might have played a role in collapsing the 8-inch pipe, which runs through an old storm drain under the street. He said it will be replaced with a plastic line. He said the storm drain arch is at least 100 years old.
“This is an old clay pipe and it is about 11 to 12 feet under the road,” he said. “It runs through a brick arch that forms the storm drain, and the arch is old. We’re going to have to fix the section of the arch by the line, repair the line, and then go back and rehabilitate the arch and strengthen it.”
