Angie Wilkinson, office manager of the Southern Cultural Heritage Center, holds part of the lettering that adorned the O’Beirne Gymnasium on Clay Street for 56 years until a couple of months ago. The sign, she said, was handmade in 1955. Plagued by the elements, the sign had been the beacon to traveling basketball teams when the St. Francis Xavier Academy Blue Wave used the facility, all part of the Catholic school complex that was sold to the City of Vicksburg in 1994.
