Levee raising expected to be complete in November

Raising part of the mainline Mississippi River levee in East Carroll Parish should wrap up in November, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Vicksburg District has said.

About 2,000 feet of the levee system in two places south of Transylvania will be raised about a foot and a half so it can meet current design standards, according to a press release. The areas are four miles apart and extend south about seven miles from the community.

A $464,000 contract awarded in August to Batesville-based Bickerstaff Brothers Inc. aims to raise that section and a 1,000-foot segment about 15 miles south of Vidalia, La., across the river from Natchez.

Two sections of the levee on the Mississippi side near Lake Albemarle are to be raised 4 to 5 feet next year. A series of relief wells and earthen berms were put in place near the lake and at Buck Chute following the Mississippi River Flood of 2011.
