In the battle to see who could make the fewest mistakes, Newton Academy had a slight edge over Porters Chapel.

The score of their football game was decided by a wider margin.

Thomas Jones had 122 yards and two touchdowns to lead a rushing attack that rolled up 273 yards total, and Newton slogged its way to a penalty- and turnover-filled 26-6 victory over PCA on Friday night.

Zack Meeks added 63 yards and a touchdown for Newton (2-1, 1-0 District 4-A) and Regan Reiss had 61 yards and a TD.

The teams combined for 14 penalties and each committed four turnovers. Newton, however, was better able to minimize its own mistakes and take advantage of its opponent’s.

“Turnovers and penalties, that’s the bugaboo. When you have those two things, it’s not good. And we lost both those battles tonight,” PCA coach Wade Patrick said. “Against an average team, it’s not good. Against a good team, it’s really not going to be good.”
