Despite a spirited performance by St. Aloysius’ injury-wracked defense, the Flashes are still looking for their first taste of victory this season.

Dexter quarterback Clifford Fernandez scored on a keeper with 2:46 left, threw the go-ahead two-point conversion and added another touchdown late to lift Dexter to a 16-7 win over St. Aloysius Friday in Dexter.

“Our kids played hard and that was all you really ask,” St. Al coach B.J. Smithhart said. “Our defense played really well. They did all we asked of them and they left it all on the field.”

St. Al (0-4, 0-2 Region 4-1A) had three straight stops in the red zone.

Elliott Bexley got the Flashes on the board in the first quarter with a 3-yard run, set up by a muffed snap on a punt that put the Flashes in business at the Dexter 30.

Fernandez sat out the first half and returned in the second half to lead the Bulldogs (3-1, 2-0) to victory.

Fernandez’s TD run cut the lead to one and gave Dexter its first lead of the game with a two-point conversion toss off a fake PAT kick.
