A parent and a former day care worker were both found guilty today on separate charges stemming from a slapping incident at a Vicksburg day care.

The verdicts were handed down after a hearing Friday afternoon in Vicksburg Municipal Court.

Municipal Judge Toni Terrett found the 23-year-old man guilty of slapping a 6-year-old boy at Kiddie City child care center, 1783 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., and fined him $157.

She found the day care employee who witnessed the slapping guilty of two counts of contributing to the neglect of a child and fined her $2,314. A third child neglect count against the woman was remanded to the case file and no action was taken. Her attorney said they would appeal the two guilty verdicts.

All of the charges were misdemeanors.

The incident that led to the charges occurred at the day care on July 16. The man believed a 6-year-old boy had struck his 11- and 23-month-old children. A video showed the man striking the 6 year old, even though it later was found that a 9-year-old boy had struck his children.

The man slapped the child after the 9-year-old boy and the other children pointed to the 6-year-old boy as the aggressor. Police said the day care worker witnessed the slapping but did not report it.

The employee was later charged with two counts of contributing to the neglect of a child for not taking action when the 9 year old assaulted another woman’s child.

Terrell did not act on one of the neglect charges because evidence showed the employee tried to help one of the injured children after the 9 year old’s assault.
