With the clock ticking down, her team trailing by two points and the ball heading toward her, Breanna Foy stood alone in the lane Thursday night with just enough time to think about the next few seconds.
She reached for the sinking pass, nearly fumbled it away, then collected her wits, the basketball and a game-tying layup.
Moments later, the Vicksburg Missy Gators collected their second consecutive victory.
Foy’s layup with 2.6 seconds remaining sent Thursday’s game against Natchez into overtime, where Ama Arkoful scored eight of Vicksburg’s 10 points to bring home a 72-69 victory.
“I was so scared,” Foy said with a laugh. “But I had faith in myself. I knew I was going to make it.”
Foy finished with 10 points for the Missy Gators (3-2), while Kailin Young scored 16 and Aleeshah Smith had 13.
Arkoful scored a team-high 30 points, to go along with eight assists and three rebounds. She took control in overtime, drilling a 3-pointer early on to help the Missy Gators get the lead and then sinking 3 of 5 free throws down the stretch to keep it.
Arkoful’s last two free throws came with 10 seconds left in overtime and gave Vicksburg a three-point lead. Natchez was unable to get a clean shot off in the final seconds.
“We want her on the free throw line at the end,” VHS coach Barbara Hartzog said of Arkoful. “We had a nine-point lead and she got three fouls. She’s got to learn to avoid those. But she’s who we want on the line at the end.”
Natchez’s Kiendrice Birdsong had 34 points, five assists and five steals. Teammate LaKenya Franklin hit a go-ahead layup with less than a minute to go to give Natchez a 62-60 lead, but faltered moments later to open the door for Foy’s heroics.
Franklin missed the front end of a one-and-one, with Natchez clinging to the two-point lead with 8.7 seconds left in regulation. Kailin Young rebounded for Vicksburg and sent a long outlet pass to Foy, who gathered it in and sank the layup to tie it.
