Be prudent, lock your doors

In a perfect Andy Griffith-inspired “Mayberry” world, no reason would exist to lock car or house doors. Neighbors would know neighbors and personal property would be just that — personal.

But we do not live in Mayberry, yet residents in Vicksburg and Warren County continue to act like it. Too many items in The Vicksburg Post’s daily crime report are unlocked cars getting broken into. Thieves are adept at walking through parking lots, lifting car handles in hopes someone did not provide even the slightest bit of deterrence.

We lay ultimate blame on those who commit these acts. We blame the ones who make this city and this county’s residents have to lock up their vehicles. Those who are caught should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

We urge residents to be prudent. Take valuables out of the vehicle every night — especially during this time of the year when we’re often shopping and toting gifts. Lock the doors. Make sure the windows are up. Make it at least a bit more difficult for would-be thieves to take your personal property.

Should a thief want in a car, he or she probably will get into that car. The least the residents can do is to make it a bit more difficult. Police can do only so much. Most of the police work will come after the break-in has occurred.

So do your part. And remember we do not live in Mayberry.
