Those old bills and credit card receipts taking up space in a file cabinet at home have a better resting place.
Community Shred Day, hosted by the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office, is being held in six cities Friday and Saturday. The event in Vicksburg is 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at The Home Depot, 50 Halls Ferry Park Road.
“Due to the ongoing increase in identity theft, it’s an excellent way to utilize a free event to get rid of sensitive documents,” said Sara Dionne, a money mentor with the Warren County Extension Service. Shred-it, Magnolia Data Solutions and the Mississippi State University Extension Service is among several groups partnering with the AG’s office to host this year’s event.
Individuals may bring documents and digital storage devices, as well as up to five boxes or bags of documents for shredding. Devices to be disposed of at the Vicksburg and Jackson-area events may include old computer hard drives and cellphones. The event is geared to individuals only. Televisions, monitors and items made of glass will not be accepted.
“Shred Days are intended to raise community awareness of the risks of identity theft and to provide Mississippi citizens access to document shredding, one of the simplest, most effective ways to protect sensitive data,” said Lana Fuqua, project coordinator in the Consumer Protection Division of the AG’s office, in a news release.
Friday’s Shred Day events are 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Jackson, at The Home Depot on I-55 North, and in Tupelo, at Walmart Supercenter on North Gloster Street.
Saturday’s Shred Day events, besides Vicksburg’s, are scheduled in Hattiesburg, at the BancorpSouth location on Hardy Street, in D’Iberville, at Walmart Supercenter on Sangani Boulevard, and Meridian, at Walmart Supercenter on Mississippi 19
