Loomis McCulloch Childs Giles

Loomis McCulloch Childs Giles died Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Merit Health River Region. She was 88.

Born in Vicksburg, she was the daughter of William McCulloch Childs and Juanita Grant Childs.  Mrs. Giles was a graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy in Vicksburg and attended the University of Alabama.

In 1921, her family purchased the old Bodley home in Vicksburg and renamed it Plain Gables because of its simple architecture. The magnificent home has often been referred to as a thing of beauty and a joy forever by family members and friends.

When World War II began, Mrs. Giles joined the Red Cross and made bandages to ship overseas.  She was avid in her love of flowers as could be seen in her beautiful victory gardens during the war.

She was known by the subscribers to the Vicksburg Post as L. C. Giles for her informative, opinionated and often humorous letters to the Editor. Her letters will be missed. Mrs. Giles’ favorite quotation was “always leave them laughing,” which was her motto for life.

She had been a communicant of St Mary’s Catholic Church since 1953.

She is survived by one daughter, Pauline Childs (Harry); four grandchildren, Michael J. Naya, Paul Naya, Maria Naya Merry and Juanita Childs Jaramillo; two step-grandchildren, Harry M. Childs Jr. and Lillie Anne Jordon; eight great-grandchildren, Matthew Merry, Jacob Merry, Philip Merry, Madeline Merry, Ashlyn Naya, Katelyn Naya, Gavin Jaramillo and Kylie Jaramillo.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Juanita Carvel Childs.

A funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 30, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Malcolm O’Leary, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Visitation will be Sunday at Riles Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1512 Main Street, Vicksburg, MS 39183 and PAWS Rescue, Post Office Box 13, Redwood, MS 39156.

Pallbearers will be Michael J. Naya, Shawn A. Merry, Harry M. Childs, Jr., David Antoine, James Antoine, Steve Antoine, Matthew N. Merry, Jacob L.B. Merry and Ricky Jordon.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Sheriff Martin Pace, Kim Pace, Ricky Antoine, Karen Williams, Jack Williams, Bud Watts, Jim Miller, Richard Lane, The Bancorp South Trust Department and Physicians and Staff of Vicksburg Animal Hospital.  Recognition is made of her special lifelong friends, Dot Lack, Dot Dorman, Joyce Smith and Charles White.
