Police seek Walmart arsonist

A man accused of setting a fire inside Walmart while his female companion was being detained for shoplifting was on the lam Tuesday.

A warrant for arson has been issued for the suspect, who set fire to a pillow inside the store at 2150 Iowa Blvd., about 8:15 a.m. Monday, Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams.

“As the female suspect was wrestling with employees, everyone was told to get out of the store because of a fire,” William said.

Both the man and woman are believed to have gone into the store to shoplift, Williams said. It was unclear if the fire was part of the shoplifting plan.

“I don’t know if he was using it as a diversion or not,” William said.

No one was injured in the blaze that Walmart employees used a fire extinguisher to put out.

“There was no major damage to the store or merchandise,” Vicksburg Fire Chief Charles Atkins said.
