Patrick Brown was determined to play football at a high collegiate level. Over the last two years, he sent his highlight tape to more than 50 colleges before getting a response.
Last week, he accepted an offer to play at Cornell College, a private liberal arts college in Mount Vernon, Iowa. Cornell plays in the NCAA Division III Midwest Conference and does not award athletic scholarships.
Brown, a former Vicksburg High running back, didn’t get signed after graduation. After a brief stint with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, his passion to play football hasn’t withered.
“That’s all I got on my mind. To me it’s not about where you come from, but it’s about what you do when you’re there,” Brown said. “I learned from my high school career, you have to do it yourself. You have to put yourself out there. I’m self-made. I got myself here so I’ve got to keep myself going.”
Brown knows there are younger people who see his life and emulate him. He uses it as motivation to be successful.
His two main goals in Iowa are football and academics.
“I’m up there academic-wise and to get a championship,” Brown said.
The decision to attend Cornell was based on the academic schedule of the college. He was also recruited by Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, but Cornell’s schedule was the deciding factor.
Cornell operates on a “one course at a time” curriculum, in which students take one class for three weeks. Brown said this freedom allows him to focus and not have to cram or stress about balancing schoolwork and practice.
Brown is excited to meet new faces and explore a different environment. The Vicksburg native said he’s doing what’s best for him.
“I love Vicksburg, this is my city and I wouldn’t want to have it any other way,” Brown said. “You have to get out and explore the world. No one wants to be stuck in the same city. I think it’ll be a good experience for me. If a man wants something he never had, he has to do something he’s never done.”
The transition for Brown is almost complete as he leaves for Iowa next week.
He’s met his roommate and his running back mate over social media and is ready to bring his southern drawl, respect and hospitality to the Midwest.
After speaking with his new head coach, Brown is secure in his decision to attend Cornell. The coach spoke highly of his game and said he likes how Brown runs with the ball, how he carries the ball and is patient behind his blockers.
Brown said his game has evolved tremendously and into a complete running back since his days as a Gator.
“Back in high school I really didn’t have any catches other than screens. But now I feel you can send me in the backfield, put me in the slot or line me up in the I (formation). I’m just ready to run,” Brown said.
