Four VHS players head to next level on signing day

As you walked into Vicksburg High School’s library Wednesday morning, what greeted you was a black-and-green-clothed table long enough to sit four chairs with footballs and helmets anchoring each end.
It was at this table where four students signed the biggest document of their young athletic careers.
On national signing day, Vicksburg’s Antonio Brown, Torrey Price, Markel Haggard and Roderick Williams took their first step into adulthood and made their college commitments. Brown, Price and Haggard all signed with Mississippi Delta Community College, and Williams with Arkansas Baptist College. Arkansas Baptist is a junior college in Little Rock.
“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life,” Williams said.
Brown, Price and Haggard will be attending Mississippi Delta as a package deal.
“We had a visit last Thursday and the head coach brought all three of us to the room and offered all three of us on the spot,” Brown said.
Price added that it’d help the transition into college life and athletics by having former teammates with him.
Recruiters for Mississippi Delta told Brown they needed more production from an offensive standpoint and were looking for people who really wanted to play and were committed to the game. Brown starred as both a running back and linebacker for Vicksburg, but will play running back in college.
“My freshman year I hope it goes smooth, I hope I get on the field a lot and get some playing time,” Brown said. “I just want to enjoy my first year whether I play or not.”
Price’s physical stature is what the Trojans were looking for on their offensive line. Price is 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 285 pounds.
Mississippi Delta runs a man-to-man defense and it told the defensive back Haggard he’d fit the scheme well.
“Our defense plays a lot of man-to-man defense and that’s mostly what they play so I won’t have to adjust too much,” Haggard said.
On the other hand, Williams is heading 223 miles up U.S. 65 north to Little Rock, Arkansas to a historically black private liberal arts college known as Arkansas Baptist.
Williams is ready for the adjustment and a change of scenery.
“I’m nervous a little but I’m not too much worried about it,” Williams said. “I think I’m going to adjust just fine. I’m going to be straight, I’m going to do good.”
Arkansas Baptist recruiters told Williams his aggressive play is what stood out to them in his highlights.
The four Gators made their decisions based on athletic facilities, campus life and other amenities suitable for them.
“I waited to see who had the best offer and went and visited the city life and campus and my major,” Haggard said.
“I went to the campuses and looked at the facilities, field, dorms and I found out where (Brown and Haggard) were going and I made my decision off of that,” Price said.
Since the players have signed, they realize the real work is just beginning. Whether it’s conditioning, memorizing a new playbook or preparing for an advanced level of education, they’re ready to tackle this new journey in life.
“My first year I expect to work hard. I’ll definitely try my best to start,” Price said.
They recognize what it takes to be a student-athlete and said the biggest challenge for them is fighting for a spot on the field and maintaining their grades.
Brown and Price hope to have a good season and Williams is putting everything in God’s hands.
“I hope I have a good time, no trouble and I’m blessed to be here,” Haggard said.
