Warren Central’s softball team was dominated by Clinton, again, on Monday.

Clinton scored eight runs in the second inning to put the game out of reach and beat Warren Central for the 14th consecutive time, 14-4, at Lucy Young Field. Clinton won both meetings this season by the 10-run mercy rule.

Kaylei Peterson drove in three runs with a double during the big second inning, and scored on a single by Chelsea Waddell.

“You never want to lose. Just proud of the girls for fighting back and scoring runs after we got down,” Warren Central coach Dana McGivney said. “Clinton had a good inning where they hit the ball really well and scored some runs. We have to keep working through that, continue to get better and not let teams score that many runs on you.”

Clinton continued its scoring surge by adding two more runs in the third and four in the fourth.

Darby Turman tripled to center field and was later brought home on a single. Rachel Darnell and Morgan Dubose recorded a combined three RBIs to make it 14-0 at the end of the fourth.

The Lady Vikes made an attempt to turn things around.

With April Lynn and Sarah Kate Smith on base, Kaitlyn Mitchell hit a double to bring in her teammates for WC’s first runs of the evening. Warren Central got two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles from Brooke Patterson and Kasy Cortezie, but couldn’t avoid the run rule.

McGivney liked that her team was able to continue persevering once the deficit started to grow out of control.

“We tell our kids we want to be up and cheering and play hard from first pitch to last pitch no matter what the score is,” McGivney said. “Whether we’re up or down we just want to play hard every pitch. I don’t really think it’s that hard. It wasn’t hard tonight. The kids were focused, they were determined and they continued to fight even though we were down.”
