Main Street is right agency to spearhead Downtown at Dusk effort

In September, the Vicksburg Main Street organization agreed to take over the fledgling entertainment program, Downtown at Dusk, from the City of Vicksburg.
But, the handoff was anything but clean.
During its meeting, Main Street’s board agreed to take on the program, but did so with a large caveat — an outside funding source for the program must be found.
Through the program’s short history with the city, it has been met with less-than-stellar crowds and cursed with terrible weather. Each Thursday evening on which something was planned, Mother Nature seemed to plan high winds or a driving rainstorm.
“We didn’t get the participation and the whole idea was meant to enhance foot traffic downtown and have people ultimately shop downtown,” Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs said when seeking someone to take on the program.
In addition to seeking outside funding for the program — which Main Street admittedly cannot support on its own — the board also discussed changes to the event, potentially including changes in the types of music, the frequency of the events along with other ideas.
Downtown at Dusk was a good idea that had poor results. It was designed to bring people downtown and more dollars to downtown vendors.
For that reason alone, we believe the move to Main Street is both positive and correct.
Main Street’s mission is to support downtown businesses, find ways to attract more visitors and continue to add to the already great quality of life along Vicksburg’s downtown. Adding Downtown at Dusk, whatever it becomes in the future, is a perfect fit with that mission.
We have often said you can tell the health of a community by the health of its downtown. If that is truly the case, then Vicksburg is quite healthy, but any additional improvements are welcome.
