Vicksburg is getting more cowbell.

Moorhead, too.

New Mississippi State football head coach Joe Moorhead will be the featured speaker when the Road Dawgs Tour 2018 visits Vicksburg on Thursday.

The event will begin at the Vicksburg Convention Center at 11:30 a.m. with a buffet lunch and social. The program begins at noon. Tickets are $15 at the door, or can be purchased in advance by calling Josh McBride at 601-618-8452 or emailing him at jmcbride@maycpa.com.

Advance tickets can also be purchased at May & Company, at 110 Monument Place.

“When you have the head coach, you’re going to have a good turnout,” said McBride, the president of the Warren County Chapter of the Mississippi State Alumni Association. “We have a limited number of seats, so we’re trying to presell tickets. We will have some tickets at the door. I’m hoping it’s a sellout.”

The Vicksburg stop is the first of 10 on the weeklong Road Dawgs Tour. The caravan will make another stop in Cleveland Thursday evening and continue throughout the state and the South — other stops are scheduled for Memphis, Houston, Atlanta and Huntsville, Ala. — through May 14, with coaches and athletic department officials hopping on and off at each destination.

Moorhead is the only coach scheduled to appear at the Vicksburg stop. The former Penn State offensive coordinator was hired in December after longtime coach Dan Mullen left to take over Florida’s program.

“I’ve gotten a lot of RSVPs and a lot of people are excited to hear (Moorhead). I’m hoping it’s a big turnout,” McBride said.

The Road Dawgs Tour visit is the first of two upcoming events that will benefit the Warren County Chapter of the Mississippi State Alumni Association and its scholarship fund. On May 16, the organization will host the 28th annual Paul Geer Memorial Bulldog Classic golf tournament at Clear Creek Golf Course in Bovina.

The four-person scramble begins at 1 p.m., with registration and lunch at noon. The entry fee is $95 per player or $380 per team. Single players are welcome to sign up, and will be placed on a team.

To register, contact McBride or Matt Bell at 601-529-6768.

Approximately 60 people participated in last year’s golf tournament, and McBride said he was hoping to increase that number.

“That’s how we raise money for scholarships,” McBride said. “We normally give about five or six. We have an endowment, and we supplement the scholarships with the money we raise from the golf tournament. We’re definitely looking to grow that tournament.”
