Mississippi inmate once on FBI’s Most Wanted list dies

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi inmate once on the FBI’s Most Wanted List has died in prison.

James Dyess, 62, was serving life at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution for two counts of capital murder and other crimes. Dyess died Monday at Promise Hospital in Vicksburg. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death.

Dyess escaped from the Clarke County jail in 1986. While on the run he and an accomplice killed two people. He was placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list in September 1986. He was arrested on March 16, 1988, in Los Angeles during a routine traffic stop.
