Voting is now open in The Vicksburg Post’s Athlete of the Week contest.

This week’s nominees are track and field athletes Anslee Averett (St. Aloysius) and Rodrianna Hall (Vicksburg High); Warren Central baseball player Ryan Nelson; and Porter’s Chapel Academy track and tennis player Henry Slayton. Voting is open until midnight Tuesday, and you can vote as many times as you want until the deadline.

Annslee Averett, a member of St. Aloysius’ girls’ track and field team, won the 100 and 300 meter hurdles events at the MAIS District 4-5A meet on April 18. She was also on the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams that finished second, to help St. Al win the team title.

Ryan Nelson, a senior outfielder with Warren Central’s baseball team, led the Vikings to four victories that clinched the MHSAA Region 2-6A championship. Nelson was 5-for-6, walked six times, scored 11 runs and had four RBIs in two wins vs. Columbus and two more over Vicksburg.

Rodrianna Hall, a senior with Vicksburg High’s girls’ track and field team, won two events to help the Missy Gators claim the team championship at the MHSAA Region 2-6A meet on April 18. Hall won the long jump and triple jump, and also finished third in the high jump.

Henry Slayton, a junior at Porter’s Chapel Academy, won MAIS District 4-3A titles in tennis and track. He teamed with Thomas Azlin to win the No. 1 boys’ doubles district tennis tournament on April 17. On April 19, he won the 300 meter hurdles, 800 meter run and 4×400 meter relay at the District 4-3A track meet as PCA also won the team title.

Voting is open until midnight Tuesday, and you can vote as many times as you want until the deadline. The winner will be announced Wednesday on vicksburgpost.com and then be featured in our Friday print edition.
