Possible tornado races near Edwards area

In the midst of the most severe weather Tuesday evening, there were reports of a possible just west of the Edwards community.

Officials with the National Weather Service or first responders were not able to confirm those reports Tuesday.

Although there was no confirmation of a tornado, there was plenty of severe weather and high winds that caused sporadic power outages throughout Vicksburg and Warren County, with the areas in Openwood Plantation, Bovina and Edwards experiencing the highest volume of outages.

Entergy had been providing regular updates on the outages through their outage website, but had cautioned residents that due to the threat of severe weather that they would not be able to provide a timeline on when power would be restored, touting crew safety.

Other power outages were reported in the Port Gibson area and over into Madison Parish near Tallulah. 

 

10 p.m. update:

There are unconfirmed reports about a possible tornado that was seen near the Edwards area earlier this evening.

Power outages south of Edwards has increased, with more than 500 customers losing power according to Entergy.

The Vicksburg Post has reached out to emergency officials to confirm the tornado and check on any damage but those calls have not been returned.

It appears that some of the most severe thunderstorms have already made their way through Warren County, leaving behind some moderate showers. Flash flooding remains to be a concern.

 7:40 p.m. update:

A few outages are popping up north of Port Gibson, with a little less than 70 people experiencing an outage near the Willows community.

Also, the large outage that was earlier reported near downtown Vicksburg, north of Martin Luther King Bvld. appears to now be cleared up. Entergy’s outage tracking site no longer shows that area as affected by an outage. Earlier, it showed an outage that was affected more than 1,100 customers.

6:45 update:

An area north of Martin Luther King Blvd. and west of the Vicksburg National Military Park, including a portion of downtown Vicksburg along Washington Street is among the areas now affected by a power outage. According to Entergy, the area lost power shortly before 5:30 p.m. The outage affects a reported 1,141 customers.

Due to the increasingly severe weather, Entergy is now urging customers to be patient in service being established.

In a statement on their outage tracking website, the company said, “Due to the severe weather that is impacting our service area, we are experiencing numerous outages. It is a slow moving storm with heavy rain, damaging winds, and possible severe thunderstorms which are expected to cause outages. We will begin assessing damage where it is safe to do so and will provide restoration times as soon as possible. Customer outage information will be updated on Entergy.com as soon as we can safely assess storm damage. We appreciate your patience.”

4:14 p.m. update:

It appears the largest outage right now appears to be in the Openwood Plantation development. According to Entergy’s outage tracker, the outage affects more than 300 customers. Some earlier outages are still down, with some customers being told power would not be restored until at least Wednesday.

Also, an area in Hinds County, south of Edwards and north of Hubbard, appears to have also been impacted by an outage. According to Entergy’s tracker, the outage affects 128 customers.
