For the second year in a row, a group from Vicksburg will be boarding a city bus and traveling to Jackson to attend a performance presented by the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.
The concert is scheduled for March 24 at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson and those interested in attending are invited to participate.
Prior to the group leaving for Jackson wine, cheese and hot appetizers will be offered at the Martha Vick home, 1300 Grove St. beginning at 5 p.m. prior to the 7:30 p.m. MSO concert, Dorothy Brasfield said.
Brasfield is serving as the coordinator of the event. She is also a member of the MSO executive board as well as the Artistic Director of the Four Seasons of the Arts.
Brasfield said last year’s trip to the symphony had been initiated after the MSO Board extended the mayor and city of Vicksburg an invitation to its “Bravo” concert.
“The invitation was presented as a thank you to the Vicksburg community for the support which the city, Four Seasons of the Arts, Warren County and the National Park Service has extended to the (MSO) Symphony both for performances here in Vicksburg and to the local season ticket holders,” Brasfield said.
During the 2017 spring concert, the MSO Board also recognized and thanked, from the stage, all these local entities, she said.
Prior to the group leaving for Jackson a wine and cheese gathering was held at the Duff Green Mansion. More than 40 were in attendance including Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr., and because of the local interest, Brasfield said the city bus was maxed out at its 42-seat capacity and the overflow had to follow in cars.
For those interested in riding the city bus to this year’s concert, Brasfield said reserve seating will be issued on a first-come-first-serve basis by calling 601-942-5469.
There will be no charge for the bus transportation or food, Brasfield said, but individuals are responsible for purchasing their own concert ticket.
“If you choose to go and do not have a ticket, tickets can be purchased at a reduced rate by calling 601-960-1565. Also, ask for tickets with the Vicksburg group,” Brasfield said. This will assure those interested in attending can enjoy the concert as a group.
And for those riding the bus, vehicles will be allowed to park anywhere around the Martha Vick home and security will be on duty until 10:30 p.m. when the bus returns.
The 2018 spring concert presented by the MSO will include “Themes on a Variation by Haydn” arranged by Johannes Brahms and “Symphony #1” known as the Titan by Gustov Mahler.
