The remaining structures that were once the Pinewood Hotel could soon be demolished to make way for construction of a new Warren County jail.

During Monday’s regular Warren County Board of Supervisors meeting, county attorney Blake Teller presented to the board authorization for the county engineer to prepare specifications for the demolition of structures, as well as building site preparation and to advertise for bids for such services.

Teller also informed the board he had spoken to the environmental inspector about a vacant home that is also on the 47-acre site that apparently has not been inspected for asbestos. According to Teller, the environmental inspector can inspect the house for an additional $950.

Questions arose during the meeting as to whether the vacant home was part of the initial bid on the project, and if not, do county officials have to advertise for bids to inspect the home.

Board president Richard George asked county purchaser Tonga Vinson if the county should seek bids on the project. She said since it was less than $1,000, it would not be necessary, but questioned if it was mistakenly left off the quote from the inspector.

Teller said the inspector didn’t have access to that piece of property at the time.

“See if his bid included the residence or not,” George told Teller. “That will cure the problem.”

Supervisors Charles Selmon asked about the pond that is also on the property and George said the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has offered to remove the pond at no cost.

In other matters:

The supervisors approved authorizing the road department to maintain a school bus turnaround in the Ironwood Subdivision off Highway 80 per a request from Vicksburg Warren School District.

The issue of children boarding and unboarding a school bus on Highway 80 was brought to the attention of the VWSD by concerned parents in the subdivision.

County road manager Larry Flowers said VWSD transportation director Robert Bass has approved the school bus route in the subdivision.

“I got with Mr. Bass and he approved it so that the kids won’t have to load up on Highway 80,” Flowers said.

The supervisors presented a proclamation to Doug Arp declaring Oct. 2 as National Night Out Against Crime.

The board adjourned until their next meeting at 9 a.m. Oct. 2 on the third floor of the Warren County Courthouse.
