Vikings enjoying, not dwelling, on big win

Based off the “one game at a time” philosophy coach Josh Morgan has implemented, it’s safe to say Warren Central has put its 16-6 win against Madison Central in the rearview as it prepares for Murrah Friday night.

But that doesn’t mean fans can’t reflect on their team’s big win. The Vikings improved to 6-1 overall with their sixth consecutive victory, and are 3-0 in Region 2-6A. Morgan said the win was a big one for the program, the school and the community.

“We want to be great and we want to be elite,” Morgan said. “We think we’re to that point in our program and to be elite we have to win those type of games.”

The Vikings kept the game on the ground as quarterback Jesse Wilson went 6-for-14 for 54 passing yards, compared to the team’s 249 rushing yards.

“We didn’t have to throw it much because we had a lead and we didn’t want to throw it because we felt like we were more physical than them,” Morgan said.

Wilson carried the ball a season-high 20 times for 95 yards. Morgan said Wilson is a great athlete who can do a lot of things with the football, which was the strategy for his rushing attempts.

“We were doing that to No. 1 continue to run the football, No. 2 he’s a great athlete and No. 3 it takes a lot of the eyes off (running backs) D.J. Knight and D.J. Lane,” Morgan said.

Knight scored the team’s only touchdown late in the first quarter on a 1-yard run, after putting the team in scoring position on a 36-yard run. He recorded his third 100-yard rushing game, giving him 551 yards and nine touchdowns for the season.

Despite his performance, Knight felt like he could’ve had a better game and broken more tackles. Knight said the blitzing of the Jaguars made it difficult for him, at times, to run how he wanted to.

“It was kind of tough toward the end of the game, but we kept running the ball and just pulled it out,” Knight said.

Morgan will continue to lean on Knight and his offensive line. He said it’s the team’s strength and is what the Vikings are built around: toughness in the box and physical running.

The biggest thing the Vikings did well against Madison Central was play with a lot of confidence.

“That helps. We expected a win, our locker room expected a win. We went up 16-0, their boys were locked in, and they were on to the next play. It wasn’t a lot of jumping around, it was a lot of serious business. I’m super proud of our kids for their level of confidence and their focus,” Morgan said.
