A Yazoo City man faces a charge of armed robbery accused of robbing a priest Monday night.

Vicksburg police Sgt. Johnnie Edwards said Thomas Lee Jiles, 52, who gave an address of 129 North Water St., Yazoo City, was being held without bail in the Madison County Jail pending an initial appearance Wednesday in Municipal Court. The priest was not injured.

The priest said he had tried to help Jiles earlier in the day after he told him he was homeless and needed some money to try and get back to Yazoo City. Jiles, the priest said, told him he needed money to leave because he didn’t have any place to stay, and the priest got a room for Jiles at the Relax Inn, 1313 Walnut St.

After the priest returned later to the church, Jiles was waiting in some shrubbery near the church. He said Jiles jumped out of the shrubbery armed with a brick and threatened to kill him if he didn’t give him a hundred dollars.

An investigator got a warrant for Jiles’ arrest for armed robbery and arrested him at the Relax Inn about 10:47 a.m. Tuesday.
